France's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are tracked annually by sector and territory via the Ecolab platform (ADEME). This regional dataset provides a sectoral view of emissions for 2016, 2018 and 2021.

Transport is the largest source of national emissions, representing over 30% of the total in 2021.

Personal vehicles are the main driver, ahead of road freight.

Agriculture is the second largest emitting sector, at around 20% of the national total.

Its emissions are structurally hard to reduce (enteric methane, nitrous oxide from soils), making it a key challenge for the transition.

Why multiple series?

Why such regional differences? Economic structure drives emissions: farming regions (Bretagne, Hauts-de-France) carry heavy agricultural loads; industrial regions (Grand Est, Hauts-de-France) emit more via industry; Île-de-France leads in transport emissions.

Analogy: the national GHG balance is like a household budget. Transport is the biggest line item: hard to cut without changing your car. Industry and agriculture are structural, while residential and services are most amenable to renovation-driven reductions.

What this is not

  • This dataset covers only 2016, 2018 and 2021 (no continuous annual series).
  • It does not allow trajectory calculation from 1990 or 2005 (separate CITEPA inventory data).
  • The France/EU27 comparison uses an external EEA 2022 estimate, not this dataset.
