Renewable energy production
National view: 2008-2025 trajectory
Production nationale électrique d'énergies renouvelables (TWh)
Data details
Renewable Production 2021
121.3 TWh
Total renewable electricity injected in France
Historical Growth
+49.9 TWh
Overall production increase (2008 → 2021)
Key facts
Regional view: 2021 snapshot
This view presents a 2008 → 2025 national series and a 2021 regional focus by technology (hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy).

Solar and wind
"The recent growth engines"
Solar photovoltaic and wind account for almost all growth in renewable electricity production over the period.
Wind output is strongest in northern France (Hauts-de-France, Grand Est), while solar is concentrated in the south (Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, PACA).
Hydro · Hydropower
Hydropower
"The stable historical baseline"
Hydropower is France's leading historic source of renewable electricity.
Annual output varies mainly with rainfall and hydrology, without a marked growth trend, as most major rivers and valleys are already equipped.
Why multiple series?
Why such large gaps between regions? Geography and local resources shape regional mixes: relief suited to hydropower, windy plains for wind, and stronger sun for solar.
Analogy: France's renewable fleet runs on two engines. Hydropower is the large, steady baseline engine in the background. Wind and solar are the new electric boosters added year after year, supplying recent acceleration and most of the growth.
What this is not
- The national series runs from 2008 to 2025; the detailed regional comparison stays centred on 2021.
- This view covers grid-injected renewable electricity production only, not consumption.
- Thermal renewables (wood energy, district geothermal heat) are not included in these electricity metrics.

What these figures do not show
